How to track your stats while watching practice video:

This first series from 11/21 - 12/29 we will spend 15 minutes of each practice competing in Bjerring mini-tournaments. After each practice, video of the tourney will be uploaded. Athletes will watch footage and enter their stats into our Google team document before our next practice.

For this series, athletes will track the following:

  • Aces |  A service ace is a serve which results directly in a point. Examples: The serve lands in the opponent's court untouched. The serve is passed by the opponent but cannot be kept in play.
  • Kills | A kill is awarded to a player any time the attack (a hit, tip, roll shot or off-speed hit) cannot be returned by the opponent or the attack leads directly to a blocking error by the opposition.
  • Passes to Setter | Every dig and pass that is fairly high, off the net and to the setting area that your setter can easily set to you for a hitting attempt.
  • Blocks | Any time the player is able to direct the ball to the opposition's court and in-bounds (can be a block touch or stuff block).
  • Assists | A player is awarded an assist when her set to a teammate is attacked for a kill.
  • Hits over the net | Any time a ball is attacked "positively," regardless if it is in or out, as long as it went over the net.
  • Serves over the net | Any time a ball is served "positively," regardless if it is in or out, as long as it went over the net.
  • Transition to attack | Whenever a player goes from base position to defense into a full 2, 3 or 4 step approach and a high jump on a hit.
  • Block attempts |  No faults or net violations occurred, and your hands have partial or full penetration over the net.
  • Assertive defender | Record 1) how many times the ball hit the floor on your side of the net (regardless if it was near you or your teammate) and 2) every time you and your partner delivered the ball over the net using only one or two contacts as a team instead of three. The exception is if Player A makes the first contact and Player B doesn't get a chance to make the second contact (such as because Player A shanked the ball off the antenna), then only Player A records an error. The most assertive player champion will have recorded the fewest drops and the fewest number of 1- and 2-contact series on the team.

As you view the videos, watch for:

1. Were you consistently angling your platform at your target?

2. Were you shuffle stepping to the ball or relying too much on diving to the floor or reaching at the last second?

3. Were you holding your finish (follow-through) after forearm passing the ball to your setter?

4. Were you facing the spot you wanted to set to when setting?

5. Were you approaching, loading your hips and legs, exploding (jumping high) and swinging quickly on your jump attacks?

Practice Notes For Each Player (Updated Last: 12/4/16)

lahidney

I appreciate your enthusiasm and hustle on the court, Lainey, and playing beach last summer really helped you improve your passing and defense. Keep working on a 3-step jump float. I think you can develop a nice floater in the coming weeks. Watch the 3-step floaters in this video to help you.

hayley

You've grown so much as a hitter and blocker in the last year, Hayley. I'm excited to see you take another step this season and learn to hit middle quick sets and a 3-step slide attack while continuing to improve your current skills. Here is a video showing middle-school guys hitting quick sets for you to watch.
